YORUBA ELDER

Stunning wall-hung metal sculpture of a Yoruba elder holding a walking stick and wearing full traditional attire with coral bead necklaces. This attire called the Agbada comprises:

Awosoke (Upper Vest): The centerpiece of this ensemble, the Awosoke, envelops the figure in a flowing, ankle-length robe. It's distinguished by its voluminous form, wide sleeves, and exquisite embroidery, which adorns the front and back.  Agbada means 'voluminous attire' and has a neck hole (orun) and a spacious pocket (apo) on the left side.

Awotele (Undervest): The Awotele, worn beneath the Awosoke, adds a layer of elegance.

Sokoto (Trousers): The Sokoto, accompanying the Awotele, offers comfort and style. Yoruba Sokoto features a drawstring waist for secure wear.

Fila (Head Gear/Cap): Completing the ensemble, the Fila is the crowning glory. This headgear or cap adds a touch of grandeur.

The Yoruba are a prominent ethnic group native to southwestern Nigeria and parts of neighboring Benin and Togo. Known for their rich cultural heritage, they have a diverse history of art, religion, and governance. Yoruba society is organized into various city-states, each with its own ruler and traditions. They practice both Christianity and Islam, alongside indigenous Yoruba religion. The Yoruba have made significant contributions to art, literature, music, and education, reflecting their enduring cultural legacy.
