Male Wurkun Figure, Nigeria.
Columnar figure carved in raised relief with an enlarged head, surmounted by the large crest and elongated neck synonymous with Wurkun or Kundul sculpture. Other distinguishing features are the protruding navel, cylindrical body with arms and hands connected as a single oval raised ridge. These figures are usually traditionally mounted on iron spikes.
The Wurkun like the Mumuye, Chamba and Jukun people live along the Benue River in eastern Nigeria.
Condition:
This figure shows signs of age and handling with wear around the neck, base and torso. The statue has some wood loss around the base and is offered mounted on a wooden block plinth.
