URHOBO FIGURE
"Edjo re akare" meaning Spirit in carved form is a statue seen as the physical body hosting edjo (spirits or divinities). The female figure wears a traditional hat on an oblong head that features a prominent nose and mouth, with slightly bulging eyes. A bracelet is wrapped around broad shoulders above breasts with a child is cradled in its left arm. The feet are affixed to an elevated oval base.
Spirit statues are carved to look beautiful in the spiritual realm. Edjo re akare are believed to possess power over natural occurrences and are capable of protecting the community from wars and calamities.
The figure is carved from hardwood and is native to the Urhobo people; an ethnic group comprising twenty-two sociopolitical structures in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria.
