OSANYIN HEALING STAFF
OSANYIN HEALING STAFF
The Osanyin staff also known as Opa Erinle (the staff to rest upon) is a wrought iron shaft with a circular extension above the median. A flock of sixteen small birds dot the circular extension of the wrought iron staff while the shaft elevates a big bird above the small ones. The sixteen birds are indicative of the numerical system of the Yoruba traditional religion.
These iron staffs were dedicated to Osanyin, deity of herbal medicine. The spirit is believed to be vested in the staff and hence its significance as a staff with healing powers. The staffs were placed in the ground next to the ailing person.
The Osanyin staff is native to the Yoruba people of the Southwestern region in Nigeria.
