KORO VESSEL
KORO VESSEL
The Koro vessel is an anthropomorphic figure depicting an ancestor with a bowl-like abdomen. The abdomen serves as a receptacle for beer or palm wine during funeral rites or ritual ceremonies. The dome shaped head is supported by a towering columnar neck that sits on square shoulders with straight arms. The legs are angled and short with large feet.
The Koro people are very communal in nature. The bowl carved into the abdomen of the statue allows more than one person to drink from it at once. The Koro people are scattered across many parts of Northcentral and Northwest Nigeria. They are in present-day Kaduna, Plateau, Niger and Taraba States. They are among the natives of the present-day Abuja that were displaced following the creation of the Federal Capital Territory in 1991.
