AGBOGHO MMUO MASK
AGBOGHO MMUO MASK
Agbogho mmuo (Igbo Maiden Spirit masks) exemplify the Igbo ideals of youthful feminine grace and beauty: small features, smooth, radiant skin and elaborate hairdos.
In practice, it is always worn by men dressed in colourful bodysuits. The goal of the wearer is to assume the personality of the maiden spirit through energetic ritual dances.
This mask features deep linear grooves along the forehead below a high, crested hairstlyle. Horizontal grooves are carved into the nose and the rear and sides of the helmet mask are decorated with shallow circular impressions.
Igbo maiden spirit masks are used during agricultural festivals and at funerals of respected elders and are worn to invoke protection upon the living. They are also worn to attract blessings for abundant harvests, land fertility and prosperity for the society.
Igbo people can be found in the south eastern parts of Nigeria.
