IGBO MAIDEN SPIRIT MASK

Agbogho mmuo (Igbo Maiden Spirit masks) exemplify the Igbo ideals of youthful feminine grace and beauty: small features, smooth, radiant skin and elaborate hairdos.

In practice, it is always worn by men dressed in colourful bodysuits. The goal of the wearer is to assume the personality of the maiden spirit through energetic ritual dances.

The mask features a crested hairstyle made up of openwork discs and braids. The elaborate coiffure is seen as a symbol of affluence. The item is encrusted in chalky pigment  with geometric motifs around the face.

The Igbo maiden spirit masks are used during agricultural festivals and at funerals of respected elders and are worn to invoke protection upon the living. They are also worn to attract blessings for abundant harvests, land fertility and prosperity for the society.
