IDOMA MASK
IDOMA MASK
The Idoma live at the confluence of the NIger and Benue rivers. They are predominantly farmers and traders. Idoma customs are heavily influenced by their neighbours especially the Igbo, Cross River and Igala. Masks and crests are used during festivities and funerals by members of royal lineage to celebrate courage. Idoma masks are recognised by the bleached surface, encrusted in Kaolin, decorative scarification and fiber hair implants for the crest masks.
This mask features elongated features, deep set, open eyes, pronounced nose and mouth, traditional checkerboard scarification decorates the face. Remnants of fiber hair implants are still visible. Holes along the base are for the addition of raffia fibers.
