GUORO ELEPHANT MASK
GUORO ELEPHANT MASK
The Guoro/Guro Elephant mask is marked by lobed ears, long tusks and upturned trunk.
This mask holds a significant role in the mythology of the Guoro people in Cote d’Ivoire. It is considered as an embodiment of Gu, the wife of Zamble (depicted by an antelope mask). Zamble is the spirit believed to fuse the features of both the leopard and antelope in its appearance.
Unlike the antelope mask which is usually used as a portal for making sacrificial offerings, the Guro mask is often used for entertainment purposes. They are displayed when carrying out funerals or chieftaincy ceremonies.
The Guro people occupy the valley regions of the Bandama River in Cote d’Ivoire.
