The Gelede ritual is celebrated in acknowledgement of motherhood and the spiritual relevance of women in Yoruba communities. The ritual began in the 18th century among the indigenes of Ketu, a Yoruba community in Nigeria.
This Yoruba Gelede mask is carved from a single piece of light wood and characterised by unique facial features associated with Yoruba people such as deep scarification lines incised on the foreheads and cheeks. These lines are called pele.
