DECORATIVE WOODEN EDAN FIGURES
DECORATIVE WOODEN EDAN FIGURES
Unique hand carved wooden African sculpture of kneeling male and female figurines linked by a wooden chain representing the well documented Edan worn by members of the ancient Yoruba Ogboni secret society. Two hardwood figures linked by a wooden chain without visible joins.
The Yorubas are one of the three largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, concentrated in its south western part.
Original examples of these two figures known as Edan are normally cast in brass over iron rods. The casting over an iron rod signifies the union of the magical forces associated with brass and iron. The non-rusting character of brass symbolises immortality. They are usually linked by a chain attached to loops to the tops of their heads and cast in a sitting position.
The figures, in both male and female forms signify Onile , the owner of the earth, worshipped by the Ogboni religious cult society. They are presented to an initiate into the higher ranks of the secret society. The edan were worn around initiates' necks, as symbols of rank, at society meetings and ceremonies and as protection to keep the bearer from harm and witchcraft. The union of the male and female figures by a chain represents the duality of Onile.
