BIDA CHIEF'S STOOL
BIDA CHIEF'S STOOL
Large Bida / Nupe Chief's Stool. Hand carved traditional African chair. This rare dignitary's stool is a unique work of art.
Carved from a single piece of heavy hardwood, hollowed out and decorated with ritual symbols, abstract forms and stylised animals with an incised geometric design on the top.
The Bida Chief’s stool is native to the Bida Emirates, a town considered to be the headquarters of the Nupe Kingdom
The Nupe are an ethnic group native to the middle belt of Nigeria. Living along the banks of the Niger river, the Nupe are now Muslims but the indigenous religion is still practiced by some and traditional rituals performed. Nupe craftsmen are renowned for their fine leather, mat and brass work.
Nupe art can be found in major museums and galleries. Most popular examples would be their stools, beds, portal doors and intricately decorated pots. Nupe art is mostly abstract but animal figures carved in relief can be found on some examples of their doors, stools and pots.
